Game Description
You might be forgiven for thinking that Quantum Redshift is a 1970s science fiction film, but its actually the latest futuristic driving game from Microsoft.
If you remember the classic PlayStation title Wipeout then this is a similar concept: you race a load of high-powered vehicles round a track picking up power-ups and trying to run every other participant off the road. If you win you simply go on to the next level. Like SSX Tricky, in Quantum Redshift you pick a racer rather than a vehicle and each one has their own background. Initially there are eight to choose from with the option to unlock more the further you progress into the game. Each character has their own ship, choice of weapons and their nemesis who will try their hardest to run them off the track.
There are several modes to choose from: tournament is organised into a series of four leagues, from novice through to Redshift. There is also a head-to-head multiplayer mode, with a maximum of four players in split-screen. Graphically the game looks great with the water effects in the wet races really showing off the Xboxs superior pixel pushing power. The controls are very pick up and play, and although the game is fast paced, its not so hard as to be frustrating. And then there are the weapons.
When you win you are awarded points depending on how you performed; the time taken to complete the track, the damage you cause and your overall style all combine to result in your overall score. You use money to upgrade your weapons and ship, usually consisting of such weapons of mass destruction as guided missiles and projectiles. You can recharge these by picking up orbs on the track. All in all Quantum Redshift is a very playable game with some great touches and more.
